Dive into History: Exploring the C-53 Shipwreck in Cozumel
If you’re looking for a dive that combines marine life, history, and adventure, the C-53 shipwreck in Cozumel is an absolute must. At MillyUnderwater, we guide divers of all levels through this iconic site, offering a surreal underwater journey through one of Cozumel’s most famous sunken treasures.
What is the C-53?
The C-53 Felipe Xicoténcatl is a 184-foot (56-meter) WWII-era minesweeper originally built by the U.S. Navy in 1944. It was transferred to the Mexican Navy in the 1960s and eventually decommissioned in the late '90s. In 2000, it was intentionally sunk off the coast of Cozumel to create an artificial reef and world-class dive site.
Today, the C-53 rests peacefully at a depth of about 80 feet (24 meters), just a short boat ride from the coast. Over the years, it’s become a thriving habitat for marine life and a favorite spot for underwater photographers and wreck enthusiasts.
Why Dive the C-53?
🌊 Easy to access – Located just minutes from the main marina, it’s a convenient stop on most dive itineraries.
🐠 Marine biodiversity – Expect to see schooling grunts, angelfish, eels, lobsters, and maybe even eagle rays cruising by.
📸 Photo-perfect structure – The ship is mostly intact, allowing for incredible wide-angle shots and moody interior captures.
🧭 Swim-throughs and exploration – For certified divers, the ship offers safe penetration points into hallways, engine rooms, and control stations.
📚 A dive with history – It’s not just a wreck; it’s a piece of maritime history, transformed into an underwater museum.
